A Piece of History

Tonight Teri and I watched Miracle. It's about the 1980 USA hockey team - well, actually, it's about the coach that lead them. Interesting movie and they did a good job of adding just the right amount of drama. I loved the coach, he had a great attitude toward what he was hired to do and didn't let anyone stand in his way.

Quote that sums up the movie: "I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right players."
Well worth the watch...<spoiler>USA Wins</spoiler>

Good movie.

A couple of years ago we had a half-day department meeting at work, and one of the motivational films they showed us was a short documentary on that team. And yeah, it made everyone feel pretty good.

Well, almost.

As the movie was ending, I had a thought... I wonder how our new hire, Boris, reacted to that?

I was part of the first interview team for Boris. His resume was impressive; he'd worked as a coder in a Soviet nuclear missile facility (!) before moving to Mexico in 1992, and then to the US in 1995. He was a primadonna, but he was very good at his job.

Anyway, later I asked a coworker about that. She said that she had talked to the director, who had realized the same thing about the same time I did. The director went to Boris and asked his reaction to the film.

"I... seem to remember that game differently."

Guess it couldn't be said any better than that.
