Circuit City Sucks
About 2 months ago I was shopping for a laptop and found a really good deal on a Toshiba 255 open box...and there was a $100 rebate from Toshiba and a $100 from CC. After telling Teri about the deal, I found another laptop for a similar deal.
When I bought them, the boxes were not included (open box buys). I asked if the rebates would be honored and the clerk gave me a paper with a proof of purchase, and said that they would be honored.
Guess what. I got a letter from Toshiba saying that I needed to send the UPC codes with the Serial Number. I called the number to explain what had happened and they said that they have repeatedly told the stores that they do not honor open box rebates.
We'll see if CC will honor their own rebate.

Just before Thanksgiving I went into Circuit City in Albuquerque NM to purchase a new TV and all the audio and video cables to go along with it. After spending around $1300 in the store I went home and hooked everything up. As it turns out I didn't need a spool of Monster Cable for my speakers. About a week later I went to return the spool of speaker cable only to be amazed on what the definition of a ****** company really is. I attempted to return the cable only to be told that the item was not on the reciept and therefore they could not issue a refund. I calmly explained that I think I would remember what I bought there especially when I just spent over a thousand dollars there. The ***** of a cashier actually thought that was funny and started laughing at me and said she was sorry but no refund could be issued. I got a manager and this genius was about as smart as a rock. He took a look at the reciept and said the same thing. He said I didn't buy the item there. He then interrupted me multiple times and raised his voice at me. Before long we were both raising our voices at each other and he then called over a very large black employee that looked about 300lbs to send me a signal. He finally gave me $35 back and I left. I got home and looked over the reciept and as it turns out, the little dumb ** who sold me the TV and cables actually rang up two component cables instead of one and failed to ring up the speaker cable. The component cables were $40 so even though I got some money back I was still out $5.00. Another two weeks went by and the more and more I thought about it the more pissed I got. Circuit City has a 30 day return policy so with one week left, I decided "**** them" I returned the TV with the assembled TV stand that I managed to "accidently" scratch up. They was no problems with getting a refund this time around and that was the best part of the entire transaction with Circuit City. I will never step foot in that store again and would recommend that you folks do the same.

All I hear here is a bunch of whining by the type of pathetic, have-nothing-better-to-do-with-out-type crybaby ******** that we CC employyes laugh at behind their backs. Shop at Best Buy and see if we give a ****...
Posted by: Happy associate at December 23, 2003 1:07 AM
if you go to best buy, the service gets even worse. when my buddy went to buy a tv they told him they were out of stock, but we found out it was because the kid selling the tv was under so much pressure to sell the extended warranty, and accesories (what they call juicing) that he lied
and said that the tv was out of stock.so we went to circuit city and told the the kid that we wanted a tv with no warranty and no accesories. **** he didnt care he just rung us up (**** they even gave us free delivery ) and we were on our way.

i work at circuit city and i worked for best buy and i can honestly say that the service is much better at circuit city but the prices that are advertised at best buy are better but since we match prices there should be no reason to shop anywhere else and anyone who disagrees can email me if you wish.

I work at Circuit City and I can't stand it. The managers arent really managers, they're bosses. The so called CityAdvantage is a waste of money - and the only reason they sell the extended service plan is because managers get a big bonus.. Its rediculous.
Posted by: Matt at February 15, 2004 1:48 PM
ccity is a craphole. customer service is good there but you have to continuously pitch esp (the service plan) if not they get on our asses about it. there is a reason some employees avoid customers especially if they look cheap cause our jobs depend on it. it is a horrible place to work at and the discount sucks, do yourself a favor and go to bestbuy. seriously

Circuit City is a poor excuse for an electronics store. When I started my career out of college in IS I worked for them for a short period of time. They treat employees like "slave labor" and treat customers even worse. It's no wonder why they have been losing market share to Best Buy. The point of sale system is miserable (written in Pascal) and run on hardware that Circuit City owns the company- so much for cutting edge.
Most of the posts from wanna be CC "store managers" are just poor insight into what is actually occuring.
I do business elsewhere and certainly would not spend my long time career with the company.
Posted by: Past Employee at February 17, 2004 4:15 PM
yeah CC does treat its customers good. Just go to store 3625 and yell at the store manager Jimmy Cole. I don't know how jimmy won store director of the year, but this guy is an a$$hole that can't handle pressure. Anyone could go to CC and just lie to customer service and get what they want. All you have to do is either yell at a manager or to just really piss them off return the sale. You have 2 weeks for computer and 30 days return policies. Just return the damn thing on them and watch them cry. CC is a horrible place to shop and work for. They work you "slave hours" even when you have school, and the managerment is so gay. I know some hourly employees that decided to go for management and switched to salaried. They used to be the coolest people around, all corporate did was brainwash them into thinking company first. I'm so glad that CC is losing money to bestbuy, but the company just denies and tells there employees that everthing is going to be ok. Sorry! Circuit City will be filing for bankruptcy in aout 2-3 more years and will be another Silo.
Posted by: vince at February 18, 2004 2:34 PM
Circuit city is lucky they have XBR as a partner due to earlier relationships, otherwise they would now be bankrupt, Circuit sucks, and they will be the downfall of their own demise.

I work for circuit city as well. It's a good place to work but some things REALLY get on my nerves. Like the management for instance....they suck. And that whole CityAdvantace stuff that all the managers PRESSURE you to sell is BS too. They just make you sell it and they get the benefit, not us. But other than that, it's an easy, fun place to work. And the customer service is waaaaaaaaay better than best buy.

I work at at a Best Buy store in Louisiana and let me just tell all of you no matter how hard you work for them they never want to promote. And also to all you people out there trying to return things way out of the return period....read the back of the freakin reciept!!!!

I hate going to CC you can never get anyone to help you never mind ring a sale, they have the biggest bunch of idiots working for them, some times at BB you run into a sales person who knows something! CC sucks!

I was an assisstant manager at Radio shack for about a year before i got fired for fixing some ladies TV for free... Now i work at Whackit Silly err... Circuit City. I personally hate the job. The managers are absolutely pathetic i know more than all of the tech managers combined when it comes to cell phones. The first day on the job one of the girls there was asking me how to do stuff... and she had been working there for 3 months prior to me signing up. Circuity city doesn't know how to train it's employees and is going financially down the tube... man i hate that job. BTW i'm taking my experience to another cellular shop cause Circuit Shitty, is really pissin me off.
Posted by: Don at March 12, 2004 12:54 PM
Circuit City is much better at customer service than it's chief rival , the one and only evil Best Buy. Chris..while your experience sucked...it was nothing compared to the practices of Best Buy. You should pay one visit to www.bestbuysux.org and see what I mean.
But I totally respect you as a fellow consumer who will not stand for bad customer service. I'm with you there. I'm just advocating that Circuit City could be worse...a lot worse.
Posted by: napres at March 13, 2004 2:27 PM
I work for circuit city. It isnt the worst place to work in the world. Aside from the selling of ESP, its not really that bad. As far as calling Circuit a messed up place to work, because of the ESP, deal with it or find a new job. If you got a job at a gas station, pumping gas, would you bitch about having to always pump gas? Its part of your job. With regards to the constant redefining of rules, thats BS. CCS likes to change the rules in the middle of the game, and that sucks. You never know what your job really is. One week it is to sell one item with another, and the following week it is yet another different item. The changes happen with no warning and you are held accountable regardless. Also to all the customers that are out there, reading this right now, take it easy. The things that happen to customers, like not being able to return something, waiting for a sales person, having to listen to an ESP pitch, they all happen because some corporate **** makes them happen. We dont make the rules or policys, we just have to enforce them. Its like getting a ticket. You cant be mad at the cop, its his job to give you a ticket when you do something stupid. Same goes for a retailer. When you purchase an item that you know has a 30 day return policy and keep it for 6 months before deciding you dont like it and then get pis$ed off because CC wont give you your cash back, whos fault is that. It sure isnt the girl behind the counters fault. Try buying a car and returning it even 10 days later. The dealer will tell you where to go. Be glad there is a return policy, be it 14 or 30 or even 5 days. I am a stock holder and I want every customer possible to shop at CC. For the ones that are so narrow minded to think that CC does things differently than BB, walmart, target, or kmart, or the ones that come into stores with a big head and a bad attitude, pIS$ OFF. Your better off shoping at Biglots.
This goes out to all the associates at Circuit City, Best Buy, Walmart, Good Guys, or any other retail establishment.

You all are a bunch of complaining idiots! just find a new job or find a new place to shop. sorry that u have nothing better to do with your time but to sit and write on a web site, as for cc most of what people say may be true but who the hell cares get a new job!
Posted by: cc mgr at May 18, 2004 9:39 AM
Circuit city does suck ******, i should know i worked there for 3 years. Any moron can get a job there. The reason the service is so poor recently is due to the fact that they took away sale commisions and took your average sales check and gave out a hourly rate according to those numbers. The fact is that the new cap is around $16.00 when sales people were making over 20.00 a hour and even more during holiday seasons. What happened to these high paid associates you ask? They fucking fired them. Now the new business model is to have twice as many part time associates as full time so you dont have to shell out any benefits and then **** over our store discout. The place blows and MARK MY *** WORDS that they will go out of business by the likes of Best Buy, Costco and Fred Meyers.
Posted by: former cc employee at May 20, 2004 5:27 PM
how did they screw you over with your store discount...how much did it change ?
Posted by: john at May 24, 2004 8:39 PM
They pretty much increased the margin by about 300%. A perfect example would be when we bought a 39.99 usb cable it would normally have costed us about 12.00$ give or take some change, now its about 28.00 same goes for speaker cables, car stereo speakers and we get a weak 40 bucks off of a 27" sony television. God damn they suck, they suck, they suck, they suck. Now I work for costco and were gonna put Circuit Shanty out of business
Posted by: former cc employee at May 25, 2004 11:55 PM
$16.00/hour? What the hell are you whining for? That's better than any other dead-end retail job. If you don't like the place, go get a job at McDonald's for $6.00/hour. And by the way, EVERY company is hiring more part-time instead of full-time. Duhhh, the purpose of running a store is to make money. BTW, I work for CC's competitor, and it's not any better. It's business man, don't take it personal!

The first thing that any of you should remember is that Circuit City as a corporation is attempting to run a successful and profitable business. The best way for them to do this, obviously, is to sell products.
Once in a while you will have a bad experience because the people working there are only human (and we all make mistakes). However, it seems to me that many of the people in this forum don't handle these situations like adults (i.e. look at your receipt after you buy the product to make sure the salesman didn't accidentally charge you for the wrong product).
1. I will attest that there have been one or two occasions where I forgot to ring up a special promotion (or something along those lines) and the customer pointed it out in a mature fashion; I handle this like an adult by apologizing and then fixing the problem so that the customer doesn't have to pay for it.
2. I remember making a trip to Best Buy a few years ago (before I expanded my computer knowledge) and one of their associates told me (after I waited for help without acknowledgement for about 30 minutes) that he wasn't sure whether a 600 MHz Celeron chip takes PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. I will not blame Best Buy as a company for this tiny tidbit of information that one of their employees wasn't sure about; however, I can say with confidence that everybody in the computer department at the CC store I work at can tell you that my chip takes PC133 SDRAM.
3. Don't complain about your salary; When we switched from commissioned to hourly wages (working at one of the lower-volume stores), I was one of the highest paid people at my store at $11.50/hour (which is exactly what I averaged on commission). I didn't even think to complain about this, since I know that an average Best Buy employee makes somewhere around $7/hour in my district. I am now making $12.25/hour after a few raises and I am not about to complain about $25,000 with no college degree.
4. Yes, managers get bonuses when their department sells things; this is the best way to run a business. If the manager didn't get bonuses, the store wouldn't sell as much and the company would make less money. Would that be a good business decision?
5. Yes, the store wants to sell service plans because they make money on them. If you could sell something for $50 that only costs you $25 to buy, would you do it? The customer can choose whether or not they want to purchase this service plan; if you're too weak-minded to resist sales pressure, maybe you should talk to a therapist.
6. You may think that the CityAdvantage plan is a waste of money; that's a personal opinion. I'll have to beg to differ: I purchased it on my laptop, and sure enough, the service people are about to repair it for free. Of course the store makes money on the warranty, otherwise they wouldn't sell it. However, most companies charge $80/hour for labor to repair most merchandise; if those technicians get paid $80/hour, I want to do that for a living. The technician makes about $20/hour, so the company can afford to fix your product for much less than what you'd pay to fix it. Therefore, they can offer warranties that cost less than consumer-level repairs.
7. I'll agree that they screwed us as far as the discount goes, but it's not bad enough for me to want to leave a $12.25/hour job while I'm still in college. Anyway, we had it coming; I don't know about any of you other guys, but I definitely used the discount to buy things for my friends (which we weren't allowed to do).
8. As far as the rebate issue that started this thread, I'll attest that this is not the first time I have heard that problem. However, if you go back to your local CC store, they should give you a refund for however much money you got screwed out of. If they don't, you should ask for the Cool Line number (which is basically who you call with complaints) and tell them about it; they should get you your money back.
Anyway, I should be getting to sleep, but I'll probably check back here.

CC has horrible customer service. I can't even understand the reps from India... More and more companies pull their support to India. I feel this is horrible!!!!!!!!!!!111

I'm a happy employee at circuit city. The employees are great, managers are awesome. Even the store manage gets envolved with us, he reminds me of Tony Robbings. inspirational speaker.

I worked at Circuit City since Oct. 2003 and there are good and bad things about working there. I don't know if it's just my store, but no one I know in my store got a raise yet. (that 25 cents raise). They told us it would come around Spring and now it has passed. But still, this is probably one of the better retail establishments to work at.

Approximately how much can a manager at CC make? In fact can anyone tell me the most one could probably make a year? With salary and lots of bonuses.
Posted by: Danielle Gravehurst at August 4, 2004 2:57 PM
Hello all, first off I have to say that I am a current employee of Circuit City, and I agree with most of the other employee's feelings about working for Circuit City. Every job has its good and bad points, however, in the past year and a half there have been more negatives than posotives happening at CC. I have been working for CC for almost 3 years now, and it has been a good place for a student to work at while attending college/HS. I am one of the few remaining commission staff employees at my store that was forced into an hourly pay scale. Ever since the day they moved us to hourly, they have attempted to cut corners in order to save money. Other than firing the commission employees who made too much money (which I hear CC is getting sued over.), they have sold their bank (FNANB), URGED everyone to sign up for "direct deposit" in order to cut back on payroll staff, they moved our computer service call centers to India (which I always get complaints about, and I don't blame thse who do complain), closed down local service areas, changed thier employee discount rates in order to "accomodate for shipping costs" (which was total BS...$400 dollar shipping on a TV?), and even more instances than this. I have to say that I am generally happy with my job, but mostly because of the people that I work with, not because of what my job is. I used to love my job, but our company is moving in the way of a Best Buy style of management. When I arrived at CC, your #1 job responsibility as an associate was to "deliver outstanding customer service". Now our new #1 job responsibility is to "Sell". Sad thing is, we sold more products and services when our goal was to give great customer service (at least I feel I sold more). Don't get me wrong, even if I didn't work at CC, I would DEFINATELY shop at CC for all my needs. I can see by far (especially after working there) that CC delivers better customer service than anyone else I have ever done business with (I.E. Best Buy). I agree with almost everything that "cc employee" said in his June 11th post. However something that CC left out of thier "Commission to Hourly" changeover is that they averaged your income through the months of "January to September" and decided to leave out the holiday season income which makes up 35-40% of a commission employee's salary. I am not complaining about what I make being that I am a student living at home, however I would be very aggrivated if I was a family man who NEEDED this job in order to survive. The company may be headed in the right direction for stock holders, but as a company, I don't expect them to last very much longer but then again I am not someone high up in the company and maybe someone else can dispute this opinion. I am hoping to find a much more fun of a job that can possibly meet my pay as of now. Thanks for reading my rant. :-)

I just left circuit city after4yrs and have a business degree and take orders from a GED high school drop out that screws all the sales councelors out on the floor. My warehouse lead comes in drunk every friday to do trucks. The management there in all uneducated people that don't know their foots from there *** and when inventory comes up missing instead of blamming the high school drop out they blam the employees. There policy bring in a doctors excuse when your going to be out is bull.
