Prayer Warrior
Yesterday Teri wasn't feeling well and I was getting ready to leave for school. This was pretty disruptive to the family, yet also an opportunity to see some of the results of our efforts in raising a spiritual champion.
After fixing lunch I returned to the living room to find Kevin say "...in Jesus name I pray, Amen." I knew that he and Alex had said grace so I asked him if they were saying it again.
Teri had returned from upstairs and said, "No, he knew I was upset and asked if he could pray fro me."
Then just a short while later we gathered together as a family before I left for school and he led us in prayer for my schooling, safety, and that school would be fun.

Carded
It doesn't seem like long ago (it's been about 9 months, I suppose) that Kevin declared that he wanted to learn to read. At the time, he was able to recite the alphabet, but didn't recognize all the letters. Not too long after that announcement, I saw Hooked on Kindergarten, which includes Kindergarten phonics, handwriting and math, on sale and bought it to use as part of his schooling. We started using it around April to identify letters and their sounds.
We told him that when he finished the program, he would be a reader and could get a library card and we'd take him to the bookstore to get any book he wanted.
Today, he received his library card. I thought that it would take a lot longer then 4-5 months to go from not recognizing letters to reading blended letter sounds, it's incredible how fast a child's brain can absorb stuff.
He checked out a large pelethera of books, as usual, but today, he used his own card.

There's no need to fear...

One of the neat things about Kevin's schooling is JumpStart World. As he works through the levels, he's rewarded Super Gems (12 over the course of the year), that can be redeemed for real-life things. One of the rewards that we set up for him was to take him to see Underdog in a theater.
I had today off so he had a chance to cash in that reward. This is the first time that he's been to the theater and I think he enjoyed the experience. We went shortly after lunch, just Kevin, mommy and daddy. We got to the mall a little earlier than expected so we grabbed the tickets from the Egyptian 24 and headed to the sporting store to see the fish. We chatted on the way back about what he would have - he was really looking forward to popcorn and soda - and he decided on rootbeer. After getting inside, we hit the restrooms and then spent an inordanant amount og money on snacks (about $10 more than the cost to get in). They didn't have rootbeer so kevin got Cherry Coke in his kid's tray, which came with popcorn and Oreo cookies. He also had Nestle's Crunch bites and Sour Patch Kids.
No surprise, but we had the theater to ourselves so we sat dead center of the middle row that was at the top of the first flight of stairs (extra leg room!).
I don't know that Teri's a fan of Underdog, but I enjoyed it as a child and I though the live action version was done well. I enjoyed being able to share a piece of my childhood with my son. The only part of the movie that I didn't like was the adaptation of the theme song. They (Crow?) did a fast rock/rap type of song, which I really didn't think fit...I understand they can't do a 2007 remake and keep a song from the mid-60s, but they could have done better.
I don't remember Underdog having a back story, which was the basic plot of the movie and I think they did a good job of coming up with the question of how he came to be. Overall, it was a good movie. There were two plots of peril that upset Kevin. At one point Underdog is captured by the bad guy and something happens to underdog (which was upsetting enough for mommy's lap). The climax of the movie had a bomb scene - and a move to daddy's lap. I was glad that we had the theater to ourselves because Kevin was upset and screaming with concern about what was happening to Underdog.
Good movie, great day, and as usual, I enjoyed Patrick Warburton (as typecast as he is becoming).

School
Although Kevin doesn't officially start kindergarten until next year, we realized yesterday that his school year has already started. We've been using Hooked on Kindergarten (from the makers of Hooked on Phonics) and he's been flying though it. He's also more then half way done with the Kindergarten levels of Jump Start World.
At this point, we know that our choice of home schooling is one that we should stick with. If we were to send him to Kindergarten next year I have no doubt that he would be very bored.
I hung his progress posters today for his workbook as well as the posters for the kits. It'll be neat to see him work though all the levels. We've been focusing a lot on reading so we'll have to try to balance some handwriting and math...but I suspect that he'll finish the reading program WAY ahead of everything else.

First Bike
Yesterday we headed to Toys R Us and let Kevin pick out a big boy bike - a two wheeler with training wheels. We didn't get home in time to assemble it so it had to wait until today.
After church, while mommy was taking a Mother's Day nap, Kevin and I put his bike together. Then when everyone got up, we went outside for a few spins around the driveway, then decided we should all head to the park.

Kevin's First Joke
Kevin's told jokes before, but they've been retelling of other jokes that he's heard within a short time frame. At dinner tonight he told his first joke and it caught us all off guard...but has caught on and has since been retold - so here it is for you...highlight to find the answer.
Q. Why do fish have legs?
A. " Yes. "
Let it sink in for a while...you'll want to retell it at some point.
My kid's a comedic genius.

Last Day
The last day of school, May 25, was just like any other for the children in Kevin's preschool class. The only difference was there were more parents hanging around. I don't think that it registered with any of the children, Kevin included, that they may never cross paths with many of their friends again.
Of course, pictures were taken.

Underwear
"I learned to wear underwear to bed!" was Kevin's announcement this morning.
He's been dry for a few weeks and had only 2 or so accidents in 6 weeks so last night we asked him if he would like to wear underwear, instead of pull ups, to bed. We figured with the holiday weekend it would be a good chance to take and not lose much sleep if there was an accident.
I'm sure there will be an accident here and there, but it's another milestone as my baby grows bigger and bigger.

Dry
My schedule has been pretty full lately and will continue to be so through next week so I took some time yesterday morning to be at home with Kevin. After getting up, we got dressed and when presented with the option, Kevin chose to wear underwear.
We did some things around the house and then got ready to head in to the office. I told Kevin it was time to get dressed for work and was going to put a diaper on him. He preferred to continue with the underwear, which I was a bit leery about. He hasn't worn them in the car, or out of the house for that matter...but you have to take some risks. I made sure we had some extra clothes and headed to work.
Much to everyone's delight he made it though the day there and at home without incident. He even went out and played with the "big kids" at dismissal for a time. I thought we were pushing the limits then, but he did well.
Today, I went to church this morning so Teri dressed him. When I came home, I found that he was again in underwear and without incident. Shortly after getting home, we did have a slight accident. He was on the potty and we haven't worked on aim yet, so while he was sitting there the floor and his pants got wet.
Later in the afternoon, Teri needed to run out for a few things. I took him up to the potty for one of the usual "it's been xx minutes so we should try to go" trips. He only did a little and then we went back downstairs to play.
About 10 minutes latter he called out, "I have more pee!"
Assuming he meant he had an accident, I told him it was okay, then asked if his pants were wet. He said no, he had more pee. A breakthrough!
We hurried up the stairs and sure enough, he was able to know he needed to go and wait until he was in the bathroom to go. Much rejoicing ensued.

Sounding the All Clear
We just got back from Kevin's 3 year old well visit and he's doing splendid as expected. The checked him physically and mentally (had him ID the letter K, draw a circle, make an X and some other stuff).
She said that she remembered he was doing 3 year old stuff at his 2 year check up, asked about hopping on one leg and some other feats and said that he is a well adjusted child who is very lucky to have as much time with his parents as he does.
He's 36.5 inches and just over 26 pounds. The twenty-fifth percentile for height (which he has been tracking along since birth) and the tenth percentile for weight (yeah! he's hit double digits - he was tracking around the third percentile).
The only thing that he needs to work on is how he sits. He prefers to sit with his feet behind him, which can lead to growth issues in the long run, so we gotta get him to start crossing his legs instead.

A Happy
Tomorrow is Kevin's birthday and his Aunt Tee-T has a special surprise that will take up most of the day, so we held his Birthday party this evening. He had 5 friends (from 4 families) attend and everyone seemed to have a really good time.
Kevin's bedroom and the other bedroom were set up for the young ones to play in, the living room for adults, gifts, and cutting of the cake, and the dining room for all of the other food. Dinner was chicken or beef tacos, with all the trimmings and appropriate sides.
It was neat watching all the parents try to be in one room and leave their kids in another. There was certainly a desire for interaction, but apprehension about leaving their kids alone to play with other kids they didn't know. With the exception of the two oldest children, the only common connection was Kevin so none of the kids knew each other and only 2 of the 4 families knew one another.
We started at 5:30, had dinner, followed by presents, then cake and then bed times started hitting and everyone was gone by 8. A fast party, but when you have 6 kids running around age 1-5, parents need to get going early in the evening.
Kevin's gifts included Justice League characters, craft and play dough items, a Geo-Tracks set, some Legos, 2 Gorgonites, Robots on DVD, and his first game, Hi Ho Cherry-O.
Lots of fun, but time to have some relaxation and hit the bed - a long day is coming up tomorrow.
Pictures coming soon - you gotta see the cake!

Growing up
Little babies grow up and become little boys. It's life, it's a fact, and it can be a little sad. This weekend we worked on transitioning the guest bedroom into Kevin's new room. We're using the full-size bed from the downstairs room until (if?) we get a single sized bed for him. For those familiar with the furniture of our house, also included in the move is the shelving unit from his play room, the dresser already in the room, a bookshelf, his hamper and his chair.
The new guest room downstairs is taking shape as well. In it will be a computer desk with our server, the king size bed and a variety of bookshelves.
Now that the transition is all but complete (he needs to move in some of his toys and books), Teri said he's no longer in a little baby room, it's obvious that a little boy lives there.
At school each day I try to make it outside at dismissal time to get to know the parents better and to talk to the children and teachers. Today, Kevin went out with me. He asked if he could go play on the slide, which was about 50 yards away and I told him he could, but I wasn't going with him. He didn't care and went on over to the slide and played on his own until it was time to go in. It wasn't long ago that he wouldn't leave my side, or even climb the slide with my help, now he's stretching his independence.

A bed of his own
While at the Minister's Family retreat we had a room with 2 queen beds. We asked Kevin if he wanted his crib (the pack -n- play) or if he wanted to sleep in the big bed. Of course he picked the big bed and we wound up never needing the playpen. He did quite well, and never fell out of the bed.
Growing to fast...and speaking of which it's time to head to his Back to School night.

First Day of School
Kevin's first day of preschool was today and he took to it like a pro. There was a moment that made me wonder, while they were reaching and bending at the beginning of class...but all was well. I checked in on him about an hour later and he was playing with some of the other children.
![]()
When we went to pick them up, they were coming in from being outside - back in the class room I could see him laughing and paying attention to what the teacher was doing. His class let out at noon and he was eager to tell us about his day. He repeated bits of a story they had (The King's Pudding) and told us about the teachers and other kids.
He ate a bunch of his lunch, then it took him forever for him to fall asleep for his nap. All in all he had a great day and is looking forward to Thursday.

Things that go bump in the night
Well, that didn't last long. Just moments ago, we heard a big thud come from Kevin's room. Teri flung her computer from her lap and we raced upstairs - the house was completely silent.
He did fall out of bed, but he was still sound asleep. His head had landed on the pillow that we put beside the bed and he kept right on sleeping.
I swear, sometimes I think that boy has some sort of pain disorder. We did almost wake him from the laughter.
Having a toddler is wonderful!

Big Boy Bed
Tonight we decided to take the side off of Kevin's crib. It's a pretty big move and so far it's gone well. He had a big dessert of pudding - chocolate to boot and I expected a huge baby party, which would include climbing out of bed, but it didn't happen. We haven't gone up to check on him, but I'm pretty sure the first night is going well.
Just in case you want to check it out, here's a real audio clip or window's media file, there's sound but nothing worth while.
He seemed pretty cool with the idea. In fact, you'll see he took to the idea pretty quickly.

Birthday Boy
We held a birthday party for Kevin yesterday. We had arranged the date so that any of my family that were coming could come for both my ordination and Kevin's party. We also wanted to keep the party small so we only invited a few children. Unfortunately, of the three that we invited, one couldn't attend - then, on the day of the party, one got sick which means they couldn't come (and the other was the brother of the child that wasn't feeling well.
It was just the grandmas and my sister, but it put the center of focus on Kevin and he had a great time eating cake, opening presents and enjoy the gifts.
Makes me wonder where the last two years have gone.

Toothpaste! Yuck!
Another milestone has been reached in Kevin's life: The introduction of big-people toothpaste. The doctor said that it was ok to start using floridated toothpaste on Kevin, so we began a new bedtime ritual on Tuesday night.
Jesse used the tiniest little bit on Kevin's brush. You could barely see it on there, it was so scant. The second it hit his mouth, Kevin freaked out. It was quite the trauma for him. I felt bad for the kid. Jesse said that the scene was repeated again last night. I proposed that we get him some "kid" toothpaste, that maybe it would help matters.
Tonight, I took Kevin to the grocery store and let him pick out his own tube of kid toothpaste. I took the introduction slowly, even let him taste it before brushing. He cried and didn't want to taste it, and even after he tasted it, he was upset. He did let me brush his teeth, and stopped crying eventually. He's learning how to spit. Getting him to take a drink of water to spit back out was a fight, but eventually he did take a drink.
With luck, the toothbrushing ritual will get better over time.

Un'nerware
Kevin has been working hard at using the potty and he knows how to make it go. The next part of training is knowing how to make it not go and to do that, some books recommend letting kids run around without any pants or diaper on. We decided instead that we'd get some training pants.
We told Kevin we were going to buy underware today and he couldn't stop talking about it. After coming home from target, we put them on and let him run around the house. They're a bit big.
He went from 4:30 until bathtime (around 7:30) without any accidents!

The Number of the Day
One of the characters of Sesame Street that Kevin is found of is "The Count." He calls him Ha, Ha, Ha (in a count laugh). This morning he was sitting on Teri's lap and he said Ha, Ha, Ha, then, without prompting said 1, 2, 3.
Not even 2 and he can count to 3.

Bye, bye, bumpers
The bumper pads on Kevin's crib have become worn, and it was time to remove them. Tonight is his first night with un-bumpered crib walls. He wasn't too happy when he went down, but he fell asleep quickly.
We'll see how he does when he rolls into the sides.

Pee Pee
After lunch today Kevin was a still a little wound up so we played a new game, imitating fainting goats letting him burn off steam before his nap. When nap time arrived I told him to go to his room and get a diaper. On the way there Teri invited him to pee in the potty. What that usually means that he'll go in there and sit on the potty, get up and put the seat on the big potty and sit on that, then go get a diaper to get dressed. Today, while sitting on the little potty he used it to pee - much rejoicing ensued.
A humble beginning but we're on our way to being diaper-free.

Hey, look what I can do
Kevin learned a new skill today, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. He's learned how to escape from the confines of the crib.
I was preparing a snack for First Place tonight with Jesse's help. Jesse was also getting dinner on the table for him and Kevin. Kevin was hungry and throwing a fit, so Jesse put him in the crib for a combination time out/out of the way. He went back to check on him a few minutes later, and he reported that Kevin was nearly to the floor. If he had let go, he would have been on the floor.
We'll see tomorrow morning if we hear the pitter-patter of little feet into our bedroom.

Reading is Fundamental
Teri caught Kevin reading...sort of. Kevin has a great fascination with books and for a long time now has been content to sit and babble while looking though his books. We don't know what he's saying and he doesn't always say the same thing so he's probably just making up a story as he goes along.
Today, he was flipping through one of his sign books and was making the signs that went along with each page. He wasn't reading words, but was defiantly signing to the pictures, which is pretty close to reading as we know it.

More signs
Kevin's vocabulary is growing faster than I can keep up with. It seems that when he learns a sign, he picks up at least two. Yesterday was bird and something that I can't remember, today was cat and thirsty. He also used please, but not in context, just as a result of us saying the word.
I think it will be a while before he uses please anyhow since one word sentances will be the norm for a while.
On another note, he is abosolutly fabulous. He's taken the wierd schedule, the car rides, the long trip and everything in stride. Late dinners and bedtime put him to the edge, but he's been very, very good.
Of course, he's had some fun times as well. In addition to the zoo, he's watched the birds at the lake behind the hotel, played on the playground and been in the pool twice.

My First Babysitter
Tonight Teri and I went to see "The Passion of the Christ" and left Kevin with a babysitter. This is the first time since he was born that neither I nor Teri put Kevin to bed and the first time he has had a non-family babysitter.
There were a few times early on when people came over so Teri could get som rest, and one time when the pastor watched him for 30 min while I made my way home and Teri had an appointment somewhere, but tonight is the first time he had a real babysitter.
One of the kids from the youth group, Bethany, agreed to watch him. While Teri went to pick her up I had a mini-anexity attack and I really didn't want to leave. I checked my phone at the theater and didn't have a signal which bothered me, but then later I found that there was a signal.
I wasn't too worried while we were gone and I was glad to see everything was not in shambles when we arrived home. Bethany had a bit of a time getting him down she said, "He went to bed a little late, it was after 8. It was nine......thirty....five or so."
In all, a nice evening. Not sure when I will be ready to leave him again, but hopfully I'll feel a little more secure.

Pull up a chair
Kevin's been making a move for chairs when it's time to eat so today we hooked his booster to one of the chairs and he ate at the table with us for the first time (sans booster tray). He did really well. A few drops on the table, dropped a piece of meat and a few spots on his lap...pretty incredible actually, maybe he was extra careful since he wasn't in the high chair.

Signs, Signs, everywhere there's signs
I was reading a baby sign book to Kevin this evening and discovered that he learned two more signs today. I started teaching him sleepy over the weekend and Teri finished the job. She also taught him the baby sign for dog.
So far, here are the signs I can remember that he knows:
Done, out, dog, sleepy, toothbrush, eat/hungry, and bath.
I'm pretty sure he can recognize dad, mom, where and work as well.
He seems to be able to pick up signs very quickly and with these two tonight I think that his signs have out numbered the words that he says.

The Funny Farm
Kevin has gone crazy...a few times a day now. He'll go crazy any time we ask him to. Going crazy consists of violently shaking your head no. However, the shaking should begin at the shoulders rather than the neck - or maybe just quickly leaning side to side. The best times to go crazy are while walking or being held while the holder goes crazy as well. It's quite funny and Kevin loves doing it.
He's also mastered "Amen." I may have posted before about him saying it sometimes, but now he almost expects a prayer time at each meal, occasionally bows his head or squints, and ends with "Amen" when we do and then looks for food.
Kevin can also say "ticka-ticka-ticka" which is what Daddy says when tickling him - tickle, tickle, tickle.
Also up on the list is "Done". He not only knows done, he knows the sign. He doesn't always use it when he's done, sometimes he's close to being done and says it and then continues eating, but he's getting better.
Also in the vocabulary is Dog, Dada, Mama and No.

The Open Road
Shoulda wrote yesterday when the memory was fresh, but I haven't been into blogging lately.
Yesterday, Kevin and I took his bike outside and he rode up (in roll mode) and down the sidewalk. We had a blast, saw some neighbors and got some fresh air. Teri came out from time to time (she was fixing dinner) to push or watch.
After riding for a while, I let him ride down the driveway while I ran in backwards front of him. Riding down the driveway he was able to go faster and was in control himself (what little he could figure out). It was some of the biggest smiles I can remember.

What goes up...
A few days ago after reaching the top of the steps, Kevin decided it was time to go back down. He struggled for a while trying to figure out the best way.
He tried pulling up on the wall, then reaching for the handrail; following our example. However, he found that while he could reach the handrail, he would not be able to hold on to it and descend to the next step, in fact, I was certain he would fall into my arms just trying to get out of the situation.
Next, he examined the possibility of crawling down the steps, but was discouraged by the height....
Perhaps pulling up on the other wall would work. Nope, nothing to hold onto on the way down.
At this point he sat at the top about to give up and crawl away. As he began to crawl away, I grabbed his foot and pulled him back to the steps. He quickly figured out that he can slide step by step on his belly, landing on his feet on the next step. When he reached the landing, he figured out how to back up to it and begin the process himself.
He's now becoming an expert on stair descent and desires to practice this new skill on a regular basis (like following me out the door on my way to work).
The stair descent has actually become quite handy. In the past, his way to get off the bed was to crawl off the edge...never a good idea and never one we allowed him to accomplish.
Yesterday, while he was occupied in the middle of the bed, I ran into the bathroom to start the water for his bath. Within a moment of going through the bedroom doorway, I heard a thump that signaled his fall from the bed...or so I thought.
Thankfully that was not the case at all, as soon as I turned around, I saw him crawling toward me. Putting him back up on the bed, we discovered that his new found skill has aptly been applied to getting off the bed safely. (Still, not something we want him to apply on his own, but it is better than taking a header of the bed.)

The summiter
I went outside to move the car into the driveway from where Jesse parked it when he got home. He parked behind the truck so that the kids would be able to have a clearer path to the door for trick-or-treating. I left the basement door open - one of those parent mistakes.
I came back inside to find Kevin up 3/4 of the stairs and Jesse just behind him. Jesse thought he was playing quietly, but he was actually climbing up the stairs.
I think we have a climber. I'm in trouble.

My own two feet
Inspired by:Of Random Thoughts: Lunchtime
Last night, Teri and I let Kevin walk back and forth between us. He's getting pretty good. He'd take a few steps and then get all excited and wind up diving into our arms rather than walking. He also did a much better job walking to her, he gets too excited when he walks toward me to be able to stay upright.
At one point we put him up against the couch so he could creep, but he got very upset. Even though he was getting worn out from the walking, he wanted to keep trying without the support of furniture.
It won't be long before he's walking on his own.

Doing it My way...
I think that most people learn to walk by following the progression:
roll over, sit up, crawl, pull up, creep, and then walk.
Kevin took the path:
roll over, creep, pull up, sit up, crawl, and I'm guessing walk will be next, but who knows, maybe he'll take up driving. I'll say that walking will be next be cause he can get around pretty well in the walk behind truck thing.

Standing and Peeing
Kevin peed standing up today.
He was pretty amazed actually and may have wondered what was going on. I gave him a bath without the little round thing that he sits in. He wiggled quite a bit, but managed well. Near the end of the bath, he pulled himself up on the side of the tub and then started to pee, he seemed rather amazed.

For the first time, Kevin slept with a blanket overnight. Up until now, he's had a blanket sometimes for his naps, but never during the night.
He slept in his short sleeve glow in the dark dinasuor pajamas, which have no footies. His feet stayed warm and he seemed to sleep well.
Tonight he'll be back to his long sleeve with footies and no blanket.

Monday, June 23rd
Kevin wore big-boy pajamas to bed for the first time. The shirt was grey with blue sleeves and the pants were red. The shirt said "Little Slugger" on it. He looks like such a big boy in them!
Grandma Smith is coming for a visit with Kevin tomorrow. She'll be surprised by how big he's gotten!

3 milestones
On Monday, we bought Kevin a Highchair...Tuesday (4/1/03) we all sat at the table and had our first meal as a family (all eating at the same time).
Monday was also his first feeding of squash...Didn't look like he cared for in much, he made a face like he was going to chuck.
And, sadly, we lowered his crib, he's getting to big to stay on the top setting.
